About

Sonya Yoncheva has built one of the most versatile soprano careers in opera today, moving freely between baroque Handel, bel canto Bellini, and the big Puccini and Verdi roles. The Bulgarian Swiss singer from Plovdiv won the Operalia competition in 2010 and has since become a fixture at the Met, La Scala, the Royal Opera House, and the Vienna State Opera. Her range of characters is genuinely impressive: Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, Mimì, Violetta, Tosca, Norma, Desdemona, and Médée all sit in her repertoire. She set a record at the Metropolitan Opera as the first singer to lead three different productions in the Met's movie theater broadcast series in a single season. Her 2018 debut as Imogene in Bellini's Il pirata at La Scala drew comparisons to Maria Callas, who had played the same role in the legendary 1958 staging. Away from the stage, she founded the production company SY11 and the Bulgarian Artist Magazine, and in 2020 she co organized the Rolex Perpetual Music concert series to support musicians hit by pandemic cancellations.
