About
Few bands can claim a hit as iconic as "Skandal im Sperrbezirk", the Neue Deutsche Welle anthem that put Spider Murphy Gang on the map across West Germany and beyond. Founded in Munich in 1977 by Günther Sigl, the group built their sound around classic rock and roll, Chuck Berry influenced guitar work, and lyrics that take a wry, satirical look at the sex industry, all delivered with a distinctly Bavarian flavour. Their name itself is a nod to Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock", in which a character called Spider Murphy plays tenor saxophone. Through the early eighties they racked up a string of hits including "Schickeria" and "Wo bist Du?", scored gold with the album Tutti Frutti, and even became the first West German band to tour in East Germany. After the NDW wave faded they kept going, playing smaller venues and occasional television appearances, and in later years shifted toward acoustic shows that regularly sell out.
