About
Also known as: Spiritualised, Spiritualized Acoustic Mainline, Spiritualized EM, Spiritualized Electric Mainline, Spiritualized®
Spiritualized started as a messy split. When Spacemen 3 fell apart, Jason Pierce (also known as J. Spaceman) took bandmates with him to Rugby and named the new group after the text on the back of a Pernod bottle. Their debut release was a cover of The Troggs' "Anyway That You Want Me", and the first album, Lazer Guided Melodies, followed in 1992. The line up has always been fluid, with Pierce as the one constant, though by 1999 it had settled around him, Doggen Foster and Kevin Bales. The big one is 1997's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, which NME crowned Album of the Year and which the band later played in full live. Let It Come Down pulled in over 120 musicians, while Amazing Grace went for a stripped back gospel, blues and soul feel. Pierce kept making records through serious illness, including Sweet Heart Sweet Light in 2012 and And Nothing Hurt in 2018. Their ninth album, Everything Was Beautiful, arrived in 2022.
