Spoon have spent three decades proving that restraint is its own kind of power. The Austin quartet built their reputation on tightly coiled rock and roll, stripping songs down to only what they need and making every element count. Their name, by the way, pays tribute to the krautrock band Can, whose song "Spoon" was the theme to the 1985 film Jagged Edge. After a rocky major label experience with Elektra, which ended famously in the scathing two song single "The Agony of Laffitte", they found their footing on Merge Records. That run produced a string of albums including Girls Can Tell, Kill the Moonlight, Gimme Fiction, and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, with Metacritic naming them the top overall artist of the 2000s decade. Transference debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, and they kept the momentum going with They Want My Soul, Hot Thoughts, and Lucifer on the Sofa in 2022.
