About

Also known as: Sterolab

Stereolab built their sound around an unlikely but irresistible combination: the motorik pulse of krautrock, the warmth of vintage lounge music, and vocals split between English and French by the central duo of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier. Formed in London in 1990 after Gane's previous band McCarthy dissolved, they developed a signature feel that blended repetitive electronic keyboards, droning guitars, and lyrics steeped in left wing, Situationist influenced thought. Early on they ran their own label, Duophonic, as a deliberate DIY operation, pressing small runs of vinyl and selling through mail order. A deal with Elektra Records in the early 1990s pushed them toward a wider audience, and albums like Mars Audiac Quintet showed them sharpening pop instincts without losing their experimental edge. The death of longtime member Mary Hansen in 2002 cast a long shadow over the band, and they eventually went quiet after 2008. A reunion for live shows in 2019 reignited things, and in 2025 they released Instant Holograms on Metal Film, their first proper studio album in well over a decade.
