Steve Earle built his reputation the hard way, starting out as a staff songwriter in Nashville before landing one of country music's great debut albums. Guitar Town in 1986 put him on the map, with the title track cracking the top ten and a follow up single doing the same. He took things further with Copperhead Road in 1988, a restless record that mixed folk storytelling, hard rock, and Irish influences courtesy of The Pogues, and its title track became his best selling song ever. His songs have been covered by an extraordinary range of artists, from Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to Emmylou Harris and Bob Seger. Three Grammy wins, all for Best Contemporary Folk Album, reflect just how far his sound travels beyond any single genre. He has also written a novel, a play, and a book of short stories, and appeared as recurring characters in The Wire and Treme.
