Best known as the lead singer of Marillion since 1989, Steve Hogarth, who goes by "h", has one of the more distinctive voices in rock, something AllMusic summed up as a "unique, expressive voice" with "flexible range and beautiful phrasing". He stepped into a tough spot when Fish left the band, but rather than try to replicate that era, Hogarth helped Marillion carve out a whole new identity across more than fourteen studio albums, the most recent being An Hour Before It's Dark in 2022. Outside Marillion, he has kept busy on his own terms. His solo album Ice Cream Genius featured a genuinely eclectic cast including Blondie drummer Clem Burke and ex XTC guitarist Dave Gregory. He also teamed up with synthesiser player Richard Barbieri for the duo album Not the Weapon But the Hand, and later collaborated with Swedish chamber rock band Isildurs Bane on Colours Not Found in Nature, for which he wrote lyrics in hotel rooms while out on tour.
