Marillion came out of the post punk scene in Aylesbury in 1979, threading a path between punk energy and classic progressive rock that nobody else was really doing at the time. Their early run with vocalist Fish was commercially remarkable: eight Top 10 UK albums, the No. 1 Misplaced Childhood in 1985, and the near ubiquitous "Kayleigh" hitting No. 2 and even cracking the US Billboard Hot 100. When Fish left in 1988, plenty of people wrote the band off, but Steve Hogarth stepped in and kept them going. The Hogarth era produced its own high points, including "You're Gone" from 2004's Marbles reaching No. 7, and a return to the UK Albums Top 10 with F E A R in 2016. Their 2022 album An Hour Before It's Dark debuted at No. 2, their best chart showing since 1987. They also helped invent the model of fan funded music, well before crowdfunding became a buzzword.
