Formed in Stroud back in 1978 under the slightly unwieldy name Zeus Pendragon, this English neo prog outfit quietly became one of the genre's most enduring acts. The "Zeus" got dropped early on, apparently because it looked terrible on a T shirt, and guitarist and vocalist Nick Barrett has been the driving force ever since. After an early flirtation with a more commercial sound on Kowtow and a couple of EPs, the band found their footing by returning to progressive territory with The World in 1991, launching their own label Toff Records in the process. What makes Pendragon genuinely interesting is their willingness to keep pushing at the edges of the sound. A fully acoustic session originally broadcast on Radio 3 Warsaw became the surprisingly well received Acoustically Challenged in 2002, proving their songs hold up without the synths. Later albums Pure and Passion leaned into progressive metal territory, with Pure taking Album of the Year on DPRP in 2008. Their most recent studio album, Love Over Fear, came out in 2020.
