Sven Ratzke is a German performer whose shows blur the line between theater and cabaret, with music at the center of everything he does. He rearranges well known songs into something entirely his own, and his stage work tends to be by turns funny, melancholic, and genuinely surprising. Previous shows paid tribute to Marlene Dietrich and David Bowie, drawing full houses from Amsterdam to New York. He also toured with a production called Dans op de Vulkaan, a show set in 1920s Berlin that doubled as a statement against the suppression of minorities. His show KOPFKINO takes cinema as its subject, wandering through more than 130 years of film history. Familiar movie songs get fresh arrangements, and figures from the screen, from Greta Garbo to Miss Piggy, are conjured up through music and personal storytelling. Directors like Fellini, Fassbinder, Hitchcock and Lynch all get a look in. It is the kind of show where the stage becomes something closer to a living screen.
