The self proclaimed Godfather of Punk, Iggy Pop built his reputation on chaos, danger, and a kind of raw honesty that most rock acts wouldn't dare touch. As frontman of the Stooges, he pioneered a confrontational style that included rolling in broken glass, exposing himself to crowds, and being one of the first performers to stage dive. The Stooges sold few records at the time, but their album Raw Power went on to shape everyone from the Sex Pistols to Nirvana, and The Idiot is still cited as a foundational text for post punk, industrial and electronic artists including Joy Division, Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode. His friendship with David Bowie proved pivotal. The two relocated to West Berlin in the late 1970s, and out of that collaboration came The Idiot and Lust for Life, two solo records that cemented Pop as far more than a wild man with a microphone. Songs like "The Passenger", "Lust for Life" and "Real Wild Child (Wild One)" became genuine classics, and his duet "Candy" with Kate Pierson of the B 52s landed him his only US Top 40 hit. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Stooges in 2010 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
