Tei Shi, the stage name of Valerie Teicher, makes music that layers vocal loops, breezy synths, and R&B textures into something that feels both intimate and expansive. Born in Buenos Aires and raised across Bogotá and Vancouver before landing in New York, she builds a lot of her sound herself, looping live vocals during performances to create a cascading, multi layered effect. Her debut EP Saudade came out in 2013 to serious praise, with Noisey calling it a "layered masterpiece of melodies." The single "Bassically" from her 2015 EP Verde racked up over seven million Spotify streams and earned a memorable nod from Grimes, who called it one of the best pop songs of 2050. She featured on Glass Animals' track "Holiest" around the same time, trading perspectives with frontman Dave Bayley in what critics described as delicate, R&B inflected vocal work. Her debut album Crawl Space arrived in 2017, followed by La Linda in 2019 and the EP Die 4 Ur Love in 2020. In 2022 she dropped the single GRIP as a fully independent artist, a clean break that signals she is very much steering her own ship.
