Finnish neofolk outfit Tenhi have been building their quietly distinctive sound since 1996, and it sits in a space that's hard to pin down. The music is minimalist and dark, with rhythm sections rooted in modern rock but melodies and vocals that lean heavily into folk tradition. Acoustic guitar, bass and drums form the backbone, but the palette expands frequently to include piano, violin, viola and flute, and occasionally stranger textures from instruments like didgeridoo, udu and harmonium. Over their career Tenhi have released a string of albums in Finnish, including Väre, Saivo, and the long awaited Valkama in 2023, their first full record in over a decade. The band also released work under the side project name Harmaa, which stripped the sound back to mostly piano, bass and drums. Their catalogue was collected on the impressive three disc compilation Folk Aesthetic 1996 to 2006, which gives a solid overview of just how consistent and singular their vision has been.
