About
The Avett Brothers have built one of the more genuinely hard to categorise sounds in American music, blending bluegrass, punk energy, folk, country, pop melody, honky tonk and ragtime into something the San Francisco Chronicle once summed up as combining the heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt with the raw energy of the Ramones. The core of the band is brothers Scott and Seth Avett, joined by Bob Crawford on double bass and Joe Kwon on cello, a lineup that gives their live shows an almost chamber music intensity. Out of Concord, North Carolina, they built their reputation through relentless touring and a string of increasingly confident albums. Their 2009 Rick Rubin produced record I and Love and You hit number one on the Billboard folk chart and introduced them to a much wider audience, while their earlier run of albums on Ramseur Records showed off the genre crossing writing that made them stand out. Songs like No Hard Feelings and Ain't No Man capture what they do best, big emotional swings delivered with real craft and no fuss.
