About
Also known as: Bats
Few bands in New Zealand's indie scene can match The Bats for staying power. Formed in Christchurch in 1982, the four piece has kept the exact same lineup of Robert Scott, Kaye Woodward, Paul Kean and Malcolm Grant for decades, which is almost unheard of in any genre. Closely tied to the Dunedin sound, their jangly, melodic guitar pop found fans far beyond New Zealand, earning them tours across the US, Europe and the UK and a stint supporting Radiohead in 1993. Their 1987 debut Daddy's Highway is still considered one of the great New Zealand albums, with tracks like "North By North" and "Block of Wood" becoming student radio staples. Fear of God spent three months on the French top 50, and their 2011 comeback record Free All the Monsters had Pitchfork calling it possibly their best ever. Even after long breaks, every return has felt like the band picking up exactly where they left off, with none of the energy lost.
