About

The Beths turned a jazz school friendship into one of the most infectious indie rock bands to come out of New Zealand. The Auckland four piece, led by Elizabeth Stokes's sharp vocals and a wall of tight harmonies from all four members, make the kind of guitar driven pop that sounds effortless but clearly isn't. Their 2018 debut Future Me Hates Me put them on the map, and the title track even landed a Silver Scroll nomination back home. Rolling Stone called "Happy Unhappy" the song of the summer that same year, which says a lot about how quickly they clicked with listeners well outside New Zealand. Each record has sharpened their sound a little further. Expert in a Dying Field from 2022 got enough traction that a track ended up on Barack Obama's summer playlist, and the band have spent years on the road with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, the National, and Spoon. Their 2025 album Straight Line Was a Lie marks a new chapter, released on Anti after years with Carpark Records. Influences like Alvvays and Rilo Kiley are in the DNA, but the Beths have carved out something that sounds like nobody else.
