About
Groningen's The Black Atlantic grew out of a Valentine's song Geert van der Velde recorded for his girlfriend in 2006, but it quickly outgrew that origin. Van der Velde, who had previously fronted American metalcore act Shai Hulud, pivoted hard into acoustic pop territory, layering melancholy vocal harmonies and understated percussion into something closer to Bon Iver or Fleet Foxes than anything from his hardcore past. Their debut album "Reverence for Fallen Trees" was recorded partly in a cabin in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York and finished in the Netherlands, with three of Van der Velde's grandparents passing away during the process. The album channels grief and remembrance through natural imagery and gentle, multi layered arrangements. Released for free in 2009, it was downloaded close to 100,000 times. The band tours with a stripped back kit of just snare drum, floor tom and ride cymbal, which tells you everything about their minimalist approach.
