Few bands have had a run quite like The Charlatans. The West Midlands group built their sound around Rob Collins's Hammond organ locked in with a thundering rhythm section, drawing on 1960s soul, R&B and garage rock, then rode the wave of the Madchester era without ever being fully swallowed by it. All thirteen of their albums have charted in the UK Top 40, three of them reaching number one, and they've racked up twenty two Top 40 singles including "The Only One I Know" and "One to Another". The band pushed through real adversity to get there. Collins was briefly imprisoned in the early nineties, and then killed in a car accident in 1996 mid way through recording Tellin' Stories. Rather than fold, the Charlatans finished the album with help from Martin Duffy and played the Oasis Knebworth shows weeks later. Over the years they've stretched into country influences, soul, reggae and dub, never quite settling into one lane. They released the single "We Are Love" in 2025, showing they're still at it.
