About
Also known as: Decemberists, Decemberists (The)
Few bands make historical folklore and Irish mythology sound this compelling, but The Decemberists have built an entire identity around exactly that. The Portland indie folk outfit, led by singer and guitarist Colin Meloy, weaves lyrics about sea battles, centuries old regional events, and epic mythological tales across nine studio albums. Their 2004 release "The Tain" was a single, unbroken track running eighteen and a half minutes, based on the Irish epic Táin Bó Cúailnge, and it set the tone for just how far they were willing to push things. Live, they famously pull the crowd into reenactments of the songs' scenarios, which is a long way from your average encore. Their 2006 Capitol Records debut The Crane Wife earned them NPR listeners' favourite album of the year and remains a touchstone record. The King Is Dead followed in 2011, leaning hard into Americana folk rock with contributions from Gillian Welch and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. A 2024 upload of "Burial Ground" signals the band is still very much active, continuing to find new corners in their characteristically literary, accordion tinged sound.
