About

Also known as: Divine Comedy, Divine Comedy, The

The Divine Comedy is basically Neil Hannon and whoever he feels like bringing along. He's the only constant member of the Northern Irish band, playing nearly everything except drums and orchestra. Formed in 1989, they landed nine UK top 40 singles between 1996 and 1999, including the jaunty "National Express", a top ten hit. Before that, Hannon wrote the Father Ted theme and the mock Eurovision gem "My Lovely Horse", and he later scored The IT Crowd. The sound is lush baroque pop, with literary leanings. Early songs nod to Fitzgerald, Chekhov and Wordsworth, and Promenade leaned hard on classical influences. Casanova, with "Something for the Weekend" and "Becoming More Like Alfie", made them properly famous. Then came the sombre Fin De Siècle, a Nigel Godrich produced rethink on Regeneration, and the warmer Absent Friends. Thirteen studio albums in, "The Best Mistakes" got a video in 2021.
