About
Also known as: Graham Nash & the Hollies, Hollies
Few bands from the early 1960s British beat scene can match the Hollies for sheer hit density. Formed in Manchester in 1962 by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash, the group built a reputation on tight three part harmonies and an ear for a great pop melody, turning out a relentless string of UK chart hits before most of their contemporaries had found their footing. Tracks like "I'm Alive", "Bus Stop", "Carrie Anne" and "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" showed a band that could move between punchy beat pop and something far more emotionally expansive without missing a step. The Hollies weathered lineup changes that would have finished most acts, most notably Nash departing in 1968 to co found Crosby, Stills and Nash, yet they kept delivering. "The Air That I Breathe" in 1974 remains one of their most gorgeous moments. With over 30 charting UK singles and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2010, their run is almost absurdly impressive for a band that never actually broke up.
