About
Also known as: Last Shadow Puppets
Few side projects carry as much weight as The Last Shadow Puppets, the Sheffield bred supergroup built around Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and Miles Kane. The two bonded over a shared obsession with Scott Walker and David Bowie, and that influence is all over their sound: lush orchestral arrangements, soaring strings courtesy of the London Metropolitan Orchestra, and a cinematic sweep that sits somewhere between baroque pop and classic rock. Their 2008 debut The Age of the Understatement shot straight to number one in the UK and earned a Mercury Prize nomination, no small feat for what many assumed would be a one off vanity project. After a lengthy break while both went back to their main gigs, Turner and Kane reconvened and put out Everything You've Come to Expect in 2016, which also hit the top spot in the UK charts. James Ford, the producer and drummer who helped shape the debut, returned alongside bassist Zach Dawes of Mini Mansions. The result confirmed that the chemistry between Turner and Kane is more than just a side note in their respective careers.
