About
Also known as: Lightening Seeds, Lightning Seeds
Few bands have a song embedded in national consciousness quite like The Lightning Seeds do with "Three Lions". Written for Euro '96 at the request of the Football Association, the collaboration with comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner hit No. 1 in the UK, then did it again in 1998 with reworked lyrics for the World Cup, and somehow managed a third No. 1 run in 2018. That kind of staying power is rare. Beyond the football anthem, the Lightning Seeds are the project of Liverpool's Ian Broudie, a producer and songwriter whose credits stretch to Echo & the Bunnymen and the Fall. What started as a solo studio experiment in 1989 grew into a proper touring band after Jollification, the 1994 album that put singles like "Change" and "Lucky You" into UK living rooms. Their cover of the Turtles' "You Showed Me" remains their second biggest charting single, and "The Life of Riley" quietly became the BBC's Goal of the Month theme.
