About
Also known as: New Pornographers, The New Pornophraphers
The New Pornographers started life in Vancouver in 1997 as something close to an indie rock supergroup, pulling together singer songwriters who were already big names around town. Carl Newman and Neko Case share the spotlight with a rotating cast of voices, and that tangle of vocalists and writers is a big part of why the band sounds so bursting and bright. Pitchfork once called it "peppy, gleeful, headstrong guitar pop", and Stereogum later put their debut Mass Romantic among the greatest power pop albums. They have put out ten studio albums, from Mass Romantic in 2000 through Electric Version, Twin Cinema, Brill Bruisers and more recently Continue as a Guest. Brill Bruisers was their biggest hit in the US, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard 200. Their first four records all landed in the top 40 of the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll. One fun detail: the name nods to a Japanese film Newman liked, The Pornographers.
