The Skints have built a reputation as one of London's most distinctive acts by weaving reggae, ska, dub, punk rock, dancehall, soul, and rap into something Clash Music called "the torchbearers for modern British reggae music." That blend even earned its own label: "tropical punk." Their 2015 concept album FM, released on Easy Star Records, is a standout piece of work, structured around a fictional pirate radio station on the hottest day of the year in London, with MCs Tippa Irie, Horseman, and Rival playing the station's DJs. The idea drew inspiration from Queens Of The Stone Age's Songs For The Deaf and Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. Their ambition kept growing from there. Swimming Lessons, released in 2019, debuted at number one on the Billboard reggae chart, a milestone for a band that started out gigging London's squat party circuit and self booking DIY tours. Along the way they toured extensively across the UK, Europe, and the US, sharing stages with acts ranging from Reel Big Fish to Fishbone and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
