The Slackers have spent over three decades doing things their own way, building a devoted following through relentless touring rather than chasing mainstream attention. Rooted in Manhattan's early 1990s ska scene, they carved out a distinct sound by drawing from 1960s Jamaican rocksteady and roots reggae, soul, dub, and jazz, setting them apart from the punk influenced third wave ska crowd. Their live sets became the stuff of legend, with a rotating repertoire of reportedly more than 200 songs. Their 1997 album Redlight earned serious critical respect, landing at number seven on Billboard's year end list and getting radio play that same year. Decades later they are still delivering. The 2022 album Don't Let The Sunlight Fool Ya hit number one on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, proof that their roots focused approach still resonates. Vocalist and organist Vic Ruggiero has also kept busy outside the band, contributing keyboards to several Rancid albums and maintaining a solo career of his own.
