The Toasters have been a cornerstone of American ska since Robert Hingley, an Englishman who'd relocated to New York City, founded the band in 1981. Inspired by seeing the Beat play at the Roseland Ballroom, Hingley built something that would outlast almost every other act from that first American ska wave, releasing nine studio albums, running his own Moon Ska Records label, and somehow keeping the whole thing going through endless lineup changes with himself as the one constant. Joe Jackson produced their early EP Recriminations and kept collaborating with them, even appearing on some records under the pseudonym Stanley Turpentine. Musically, the Toasters mix ska with pop, rap, R&B, and calypso, and their brass heavy sound landed them some unexpected mainstream moments, most notably when their track Two Tone Army became the theme song for the Nickelodeon show KaBlam! After Moon Ska Records folded in 2004, Hingley launched the Megalith label from his new base in Valencia, Spain, and the band has kept performing and releasing music ever since.
