About
Formed in 1987 by Stephen Lawrie, The Telescopes have spent over three decades refusing to stand still. Noise rock, dream pop, space rock, psychedelia, they've pulled from all of it, and their lineup can shift from a solo project to a twenty person ensemble depending on the record. Their early single 'The Perfect Needle' remains their most recognisable track, but the band's real legacy is the trail they blazed for shoegaze and neo psychedelia: Portishead, Radiohead and Mogwai have all been named among those who felt their influence, and in 2011 Portishead personally invited them to perform at ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror. Lawrie has kept the band restlessly experimental throughout, from the drone explorations of HARM, recorded live on a US tour with members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, to the churning guitar noise of Exploding Head Syndrome and the more song focused Hidden Fields. Their most recent studio album is Growing Eyes Become String on Fuzz Club Records, and a new record is reportedly in the works for Tapete Records. A tribute compilation covering 17 of their tracks was released in 2016, which says a lot about where they sit in the underground.
