Few American street punk bands have left as clear a mark on the genre as The Unseen, who helped drag the rough, political English street punk sound of the 1980s into the US underground scene. Based out of Hingham, Massachusetts, they built a reputation through relentless touring across Europe, North America, Australia, Japan and Mexico, sharing stages with bands ranging from The Bouncing Souls and Rancid to Hatebreed and Sick of It All. Their early albums, including Lower Class Crucifixion, So This Is Freedom? and The Anger and The Truth, carried a sharp political edge largely driven by guitarist and vocalist Paul Russo. After Russo's departure, drummer Mark Civitarese stepped up as lead singer and the band kept pushing forward, releasing Internal Salvation in 2007 and joining the Warped Tour that same year. Civitarese also founded ADD Records and kept busy with several side projects over the years. The band has not been without controversy, drawing criticism from parts of the street punk community for making music videos and allegedly softening their political stance, but their influence on the genre remains hard to argue with.
