About
Also known as: Zombies, Zombies, The
Few bands can claim a catalogue this lopsided in the best possible way. The Zombies scored their debut hit with "She's Not There" in 1964, a song that crept to number two in the US and sold over a million copies, yet back home in the UK it remained their only Top 40 single. Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone led the St Albans group through a run of singles before the band quietly recorded what became their masterpiece, Odessey and Oracle, in 1968. That album, home to "Time of the Season" and "This Will Be Our Year", is now ranked among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone and remains a touchstone for psychedelic pop. The Zombies broke up before Odessey and Oracle even found its audience, which makes the story stranger and better. "Time of the Season" became a worldwide hit after the fact, and the band eventually reformed, with Argent and Blunstone at its core. They kept recording well into the 2010s, releasing Breathe Out, Breathe In in 2011 and Still Got That Hunger in 2015, and in 2023 added another chapter with the album Different Game. Their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 felt long overdue to anyone who had been paying attention.
