They Might Be Giants built their reputation the hard way, starting out in New York's East Village with just two Johns, a guitar, an accordion, and a drum machine. John Flansburgh and John Linnell had an ear for unusual subject matter and clever wordplay, and their quirky, genre blending sound earned them a devoted following before they ever had a record deal. Their clever workaround when times got tough, recording songs onto an answering machine and advertising the number in local papers as "Dial A Song", says a lot about how they operate. Over 24 studio albums they've covered a lot of ground: college radio hits, the platinum certified Flood, Grammy winning children's albums like Here Come the 123s, and the Malcolm in the Middle theme "Boss of Me". They even picked up a Tony nomination for their contribution to SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Few bands manage to be genuinely beloved by both indie rock fans and kids, but TMBG pull it off without making either audience feel like an afterthought.
