Third Eye Blind built one of the more unlikely success stories of the late 1990s alt rock era. Their 1997 debut album crept onto the Billboard charts at number 135, then spent nearly a year climbing to number 25 and eventually going six times platinum in the US, with over six million copies sold. That slow burn trajectory suited a record packed with hooks that kept pulling people back: 'Semi Charmed Life', 'Jumper', 'How's It Going to Be'. Beneath the polished pop surfaces, the songs tackled crystal meth addiction, suicide, and sexual abuse, giving the album a genuine emotional weight that kept it from aging into pure nostalgia. The San Francisco band, driven by frontman Stephan Jenkins, landed opening slots for the Rolling Stones and U2, which tells you something about how far that debut carried them.
