Timo Tolkki built his reputation as the driving force behind Finnish power metal band Stratovarius, where he served as guitarist, songwriter, producer and even lead vocalist for the first few records. He steered the band for over two decades and shaped its neoclassical, high octane sound before stepping away in 2008 and handing over the rights to the name. Guitar World placed him in their all time top 50 fastest guitarists, which gives some idea of his technical pedigree. After Stratovarius, Tolkki threw himself into ambitious collaborative work. He launched the rock opera Saana, formed the supergroup Symfonia with singer André Matos and other metal heavyweights, and then assembled the Avalon Metal Opera project, pulling in a staggering lineup that included Michael Kiske, Sharon den Adel, Russell Allen and Floor Jansen. Avalon's story, set in a post apocalyptic 2055 Earth, gave his orchestral and operatic instincts full room to breathe.
