Todd Terry built his reputation by smashing house, disco, and hip hop into something that felt entirely new. Coming up through New York's party circuit in the late 1980s, the Brooklyn DJ and producer helped push house music well past its Chicago roots, layering heavy sample work over hip hop breaks to create a sound that crossed over from underground clubs into the charts. His remixes of "I'll House You" by the Jungle Brothers and Everything but the Girl's "Missing" are still considered two of the genre's defining moments. Operating under a string of aliases including Royal House, Black Riot, Swan Lake and the Gypsymen, Terry racked up a serious run of UK hits. "Something Goin' On" and "Keep on Jumpin'" both went top ten in the UK, with Jocelyn Brown and Martha Wash on vocals. He also remixed Michael Jackson's "Stranger in Moscow", and his track "Weekend" ended up in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Through his own InHouse Records, he has kept a vast catalog in circulation while continuing to put out new music.
