About
Tom Rainey spent roughly thirty years as one of jazz's most in demand sidemen before stepping out front, releasing his debut album Pool School in 2010 alongside guitarist Mary Halvorson and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock. That trio format suited him well, and he has kept a steady pace as a leader ever since, putting out records on Intakt that show off his restless, conversational drumming style. His long partnership with Tim Berne remains one of the defining threads of his career, running through bands like Big Satan, Hard Cell, Paraphrase, and Science Friction across the 1990s and 2000s. Beyond Berne, he has worked with a remarkable range of players including Nels Cline, Fred Hersch, Tony Malaby, and Kris Davis. His dual role as a bandleader and a go to collaborator gives his output a breadth that is genuinely rare in improvised music.
