About

Rotterdam born bassist Tony Overwater has spent decades building one of the more adventurous careers in Dutch jazz, stretching far beyond straight ahead playing into Arab music, early music, and even children's stories about a frog. His work with Lebanese vocalist Rima Khcheich is a good example of how far he pushes things: he developed a technique to play Arab microtonalities on the acoustic bass, effectively replacing the oud in the muwashshah tradition. That same album, Kikker Swingt, a collaboration with illustrator and author Max Velthuijs, went gold and introduced his music to a whole new audience. Overwater picked up the Boy Edgar Award in 2002, the top jazz prize in the Netherlands, and an Edison for the Oscar Pettiford tribute album Op. He has been a cornerstone of the Yuri Honing Trio for over 25 years and is a founding member of the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio, a group that regularly brings in guest musicians from the Middle East. His reach also extends into film music, dance, and music education for children through organisations like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
