Mackenzie Scott, who records as TORRES, has built a catalog that keeps shifting shape in the best possible way. Starting with a raw, self titled debut tracked in five days at Tony Joe White's home studio, Scott moved through the heavy, electronically tinged Sprinter, then into the gothic industrial and Krautrock textures of Three Futures, before landing somewhere more intimate on Silver Tongue. The fifth album Thirstier and the 2024 follow up What an Enormous Room keep that restless streak going. Sylvia Plath is a named influence alongside Brandi Carlile and Fleetwood Mac, and you can feel all three pulling at Scott's songwriting in different ways. Live, TORRES leans into the theatrical side, something Scott traces back to musical theatre roots rather than any rock and roll posturing. The sixth album earned a collaboration with Julien Baker on the 2025 joint release Send a Prayer My Way, a pairing that makes a lot of sense given both artists' talent for wringing real emotional weight out of spare arrangements.
