About

Also known as: Toy Dolls, Toy Dollz

Sunderland's Toy Dolls have been one of punk's most distinctive acts since 1979, built around guitarist and vocalist Olga (Michael Algar) as the sole constant member through a revolving lineup of bassists and drummers. Their signature blend of high speed punk and deadpan British humour produced songs like "Yul Brynner Was a Skinhead", "My Girlfriend's Dad's a Vicar" and "James Bond Lives Down Our Street", plus kazoos, synchronized choreography, spinning guitars and timed jumps at live shows. Their biggest chart moment came when a reissue of their punk cover of "Nellie the Elephant" hit No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart in 1984 and stuck around for 14 weeks. Every album tends to feature a sped up cover of a well known track, from "Sabre Dance" to "Livin' La Vida Loca", and titles like "The Devil Went Down to Scunthorpe" give a pretty good idea of what they are about. They have toured relentlessly across Europe, Japan and South America, and Olga has also shared his guitar techniques through a series of instructional video sessions.
