Trampled by Turtles built their sound around a pretty unlikely origin story: after frontman Dave Simonett had his gear stolen, he was left with just an acoustic guitar, which pushed him toward bluegrass and folk almost by necessity. He recruited fellow newcomers to the acoustic world, including a fiddler who had been playing drums in a speed metal band, and they landed on a sound described as fast and frenetic, owing as much to rock and roll as to bluegrass. The band name itself was picked as the option everyone hated the least. Out of Duluth, Minnesota, they have released ten albums and scored three No. 1 spots on the Billboard bluegrass chart. Their fifth album, Palomino, stayed in the chart's Top 10 for 52 consecutive weeks. Their music has turned up in places like the video game Far Cry 5, the film The Way Way Back, and TV shows including Deadliest Catch and Ray Donovan. They have played festivals from Coachella to Bonnaroo, and hold a star on the iconic First Avenue mural in Minneapolis.
