Travis named themselves after the Harry Dean Stanton character in the 1984 film Paris, Texas, which gives you a decent sense of their cinematic, emotionally direct approach to rock. The Glasgow four piece broke through properly with their second album The Man Who in 1999, which spent nine weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart and eventually shifted over 2.68 million copies in the UK alone, earning a 9× platinum certification. Their follow up, The Invisible Band, debuted at the top of the same chart and cracked the US Billboard 200. At their peak they twice took home best band at the Brit Awards and were named NME Artist of the Year in 2000. Tracks like Why Does It Always Rain On Me? and Sing became touchstones of the late Britpop and indie pop era, blending jangly guitars with Fran Healy's distinctively warm vocals. They have kept releasing records across the decades, with albums spanning from 12 Memories in 2003 through to L.A. Times in 2024, showing a stubborn commitment to melodic guitar rock that most of their contemporaries quietly abandoned.
