Trio Zadig takes its name from Voltaire's character Zadig, a word that carries the meaning of 'the righteous' in Hebrew and 'the truthful' in Arabic. That choice of name says something about how this French piano trio operates: with a sense of purpose that extends well beyond the concert hall. The group regularly brings music into schools, hospitals and prisons, driven by a genuine belief in what music can do for people. Menahem Pressler, the celebrated pianist behind the Beaux Arts Trio, once described the three players as extraordinarily gifted instrumentalists who are, at the same time, truly searching musicians. That combination of technical ability and open curiosity runs through their repertoire choices too. Their programme includes works like Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht, performed in a piano trio arrangement that lets the piano's distinct timbre throw the music's emotional tensions into sharp relief.
