About
Undercurrent Trio is led by Iman Spaargaren, who plays tenor saxophone and clarinet, with guitarist Guillermo Celano and drummer Marcos Baggiani alongside him. There's no bass in the lineup, which leaves a lot of open space in the music. Composed melodies and fiery improvisation trade places throughout. The group made the album Cloud Song with trumpeter Suzan Veneman as a fourth voice, and the Volkskrant called it an exciting, sparkling record. Later the band grew into a five piece called Undercurrent 5 when Cologne alto saxophonist Angelika Niescier joined. She has won the Deutscher Jazzpreis and the WDR Jazzpreis and has worked with Tyshawn Sorey and Kris Davis.
