About
Also known as: UMO
Unknown Mortal Orchestra built their reputation on a genuinely mysterious start: frontman Ruban Nielson anonymously uploaded the track "Ffunny Ffrends" to Bandcamp in 2010, and within a day the internet was buzzing trying to figure out who made it. That kind of intrigue suits a band whose sound blurs lo fi haze, psychedelic pop and groove heavy garage rock into something hard to pin down. Their 2011 self titled debut on Fat Possum Records earned serious critical love, and the follow up II drew comparisons to George Harrison's psychedelia and classic soul, winning Best Alternative Album at the New Zealand Music Awards. The third album Multi Love pushed things further, landing on Pitchfork's "most accomplished" list and getting two singles A listed at BBC Radio 6 Music. Sex & Food arrived in 2018 to more praise, leaning into synthesizers and sampled textures while keeping Nielson's signature warm, soulful vocals front and center. UMO remains one of the more reliably inventive acts in modern psychedelic rock.
