Valerie June makes music that defies easy categorization, blending psychedelic folk, Appalachian sounds, country soul, blues, and symphonic pop into something she once called "organic moonshine roots music". Her breakthrough came with Pushin' Against a Stone, co written and produced with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, featuring contributions from Booker T. Jones and earning her a Blues Music Award nomination for Best New Artist Debut. The album captures a gritty, deeply personal spirit, and June has said it reflects a lifetime of pushing through obstacles. Rolling Stone placed her follow up, The Order of Time, among the 50 Best Albums of 2017, and Bob Dylan name dropped her that same year when asked which artists he admired. Her third studio album, The Moon and Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers, arrived in 2021 on Fantasy Records and landed an 85 on Metacritic. Co produced with Jack Splash and featuring Carla Thomas on the single "Call Me a Fool", it showed June continuing to stretch her sound into something dreamy and distinctly her own.
