Vampire Weekend built their reputation by doing something no one expected to work: blending Afropop rhythms and chamber music textures into tight, catchy indie rock. Formed in New York City, the four piece of Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio released their self titled debut in 2008 to instant acclaim, with "A Punk" and "Oxford Comma" becoming unlikely radio staples. The album landed at number 17 on the Billboard 200 and is regularly cited as one of the greatest debut albums in recent memory. They followed that up with Contra, which hit number one on the Billboard 200, and kept the momentum going through Modern Vampires of the City and Father of the Bride, each winning the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Batmanglij stepped back from full membership in 2016 but has kept contributing behind the scenes. Their fifth album, Only God Was Above Us, arrived in April 2024, with tracks like "Classical" and "Mary Boone" showing the band still operating at a high level.
