About

Also known as: Vasily Petrenko, Vassily Petrenko, Василий Эдуардович Петренко

Vasily Petrenko is the kind of conductor who genuinely turns orchestras around. When he took the helm at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006, he was the youngest person ever to hold the principal conductor post there, and under his watch the orchestra's finances and audiences both grew. He built a strong reputation for Russian repertoire, especially Shostakovich, while also winning praise for Brahms and English music. His recording of Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony took the Gramophone orchestral recording of the year in 2009. After a successful run leading the Oslo Philharmonic as chief conductor, he moved on to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, where he now serves as music director, a role extended through the 2029 to 2030 season. He has recorded extensively for Naxos and has championed classical music outreach in the UK, including a manifesto to give British schoolchildren free access to live classical concerts. A keen football fan, he follows FC Zenit Saint Petersburg and Liverpool FC with equal enthusiasm.
