Winning the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2017 put French cellist Victor Julien Laferrière firmly on the map, but he had already been building a serious reputation well before that. Born in Paris, he plays both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and it is in that second setting where some of his most compelling work lives. He is a co founder of Trio Les Esprits alongside pianist Adam Laloum and violinist Mi Sa Yang, a group that has performed at major French festivals and venues and released recordings on the Mirare label. Their disc of Brahms and Schumann trios came out in 2014, followed by cello sonatas with Laloum in 2016. He has also worked with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Staatsphilharmonie Košice, and holds a conducting role alongside his cello career.
