About

Steven Isserlis plays cello on a 1726 Stradivari, and the gut strings he favours give him a sound that is instantly recognisable among classical cellists. His big breakthrough came in 1988 when he asked composer John Tavener to write something for cello and orchestra. The resulting piece, The Protecting Veil, premiered at the BBC Proms with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and became a classical bestseller in its recorded form, cementing Isserlis as one of his generation's defining soloists. Since then he has performed with virtually every major orchestra you can name, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Chicago Symphony, and has premiered new works by composers including Thomas Adès, Wolfgang Rihm and Mikhail Pletnev. He is also an enthusiastic advocate for period instrument performance, having played Beethoven with fortepianist Robert Levin and Dvořák with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Away from the concert platform, he has written children's books about famous composers and a companion volume devoted entirely to Bach's cello suites.
