About
Sol Gabetta plays cello with a rare combination of technical precision and real emotional depth, and the instrument she does it on is worth noting: a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini from 1759, supported by a private stipend. The Argentine cellist has built an impressive discography across Sony Classical and Deutsche Grammophon, recording everything from Shostakovich and Elgar to Vivaldi and Ginastera. She founded her own festival, the Festival Solsberg, back in 2006, and has held residencies at major institutions including the Philharmonie and Konzerthaus Berlin. Composers have written specifically for her, including Pēteris Vasks, whose cello concerto Presence she premiered, and Michel van der Aa, who composed Up close for her and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. She opened the BBC Proms 2016 season playing Elgar's Cello Concerto, and returned to the Proms in 2024 for the UK premiere of Francisco Coll's Cello Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She has been teaching at the Basel Music Academy since 2005.
