About
Alexander Malofeev is a Russian pianist from Moscow who made the world sit up and take notice at just thirteen, winning first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in 2014. Since then he has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras on the planet, from the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra to the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, working alongside conductors like Riccardo Chailly, Yannick Nézet Séguin, and Michael Tilson Thomas. His repertoire leans heavily on the Russian romantic tradition, with Rachmaninoff at its core, and critics have praised his playing for its magnetic pull and a tone that seems to float above the keys. Malofeev has been outspoken in his opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and relocated to Berlin at the end of 2022. His debut album Forgotten Melodies, released on Sony Classical, centres on four composers who were born in Russia but died in exile, including Rachmaninoff and Medtner, and he describes the music as haunted by a nostalgia for a place that never quite existed.
